چکیده

This paper considers the potential for the use of learner models to promote reflection in combined desktop PC / mobile intelligent learning environments. This is illustrated with reference to two such environments. The first is an adaptive tutoring system that has two versions (for the desktop PC and handheld computer), each of which has the same interaction options. In the second, the main tutorial interaction takes place on the desktop PC, after which tailored revision material based on the learner model is synchronised to the handheld computer for later consultation. Each system has an open learner model to promote learner reflection, but the differences in the two systems dictate the use of different kinds of open learner model.

Exploring Participative Learner Modelling and Its Effects on Learner Behaviour

The educational benefits of involving learners as active players in the learner modelling process have been an important motivation for research on this form of learner modelling, henceforth referred to as participative learner modelling. Such benefits, conceived as the promotion of learners’ reflection on and awareness of their own knowledge, have in most cases been asserted on the grounds of ...

Incremental student modelling and reflection by verified concept-mapping

Concept mapping is a technique for externalising a conceptualisation in terms of a visual two dimensional layout which shows the propositions believed by the learner as well as other similarity and hierarchy relationships. In this paper, we describe VCM, the verified concept mapper. It is a novel form of concept mapping designed to elicit a learner’s understanding, as a basis for building a lea...

Maintaining Diagnostic Interactions that Promote Learners' Reflection

This paper presents an approach to dynamically extract individual learner models by engaging learners in diagnostic interactions. A framework for maintaining diagnostic dialogues based on approaches known as dialogue games is outlined and illustrated in STyLE-OLM an interactive open learner modelling system. The potential for encouraging learners' reflection is discussed based on an example dia...

Open Learner Modelling as the Keystone of the Next Generation of Adaptive Learning Environments

It is believed that, with the help of suitable technology, learners and systems can cooperate in building a sufficiently accurate learner model they can use to promote learner reflection through discussion of their knowledge, preferences and motivational dispositions (among other learner characteristics). Open learner modelling is a technology that can help set up this discussion by giving the ...

The Potential for Chatbots in Negotiated Learner Modelling: A Wizard-of-Oz Study

This paper explores the feasibility of using conversational agents, or chatbots, in negotiated learner modelling. This approach aims to combine the motivational, intuitive and domain-independent benefits of natural language dialogue using a chatbot, with the opportunities for learner reflection and increased model accuracy that can be achieved through negotiation of the learner model contents. ...
